How it works.
Landowners sign up with Hipcamp as Hosts and create a listing that shows the area available to Hipcampers — whether a place to pitch a tent or an existing structure like a yurt or cabin. Hosts set their own price, Hipcampers book and pay for their stay directly through Hipcamp, and hosts keep 90% of the payment. The rest covers credit card fees, liability insurance up to $1 million, and property protection.
Hipcamp’s first company value is to “Leave it Better”. For our community of Hosts and Hipcampers, this means being thoughtful neighbors, responsible citizens, and environmental stewards. Here are some things Hipcamp does to encourage responsible camping:
● $1 million per incident liability insurance for every Host.
● Customer support on call for Hosts and Hipcampers seven days per week.
● Host Standards that detail our requirements on everything from fire safety and occupancy limits, to quiet hours and tax remittance.
● Integration with the National Weather Service to provide real-time fire advisories.
● Awareness campaigns to educate Hipcampers about what it means to recreate responsibly.
The Hipcamp Community.
More than 8,000 Hipcamp Hosts welcome Hipcampers in more than 1,100 counties across all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and Australia. Hipcamp has helped people spend more than 3 million nights outside.
Farmers and ranchers.
● About half of our Hosts characterize their land as farm, ranch, or agricultural land.
● Another third characterize their land as a homestead or undeveloped.
● Hosts are long-time landowners who have lived in the county for an average of 19 years.
● Forty percent of Hosts use income from hosting to pay their mortgage or property taxes.
● About half of our Hosts are women over 55.
● The vast majority of our Hosts host part-time or as a hobby.
● Nearly nine out of ten hosts recommend restaurants, cafes, gear shops, outfitters, or other small local businesses to Hipcampers before or during their stay.
Married and family-oriented.
● Two-thirds are married or living with their partner, and about half have children.
● A quarter of Hipcampers go camping to introduce their family to outdoor activities.
Safe and respectful.
● The vast majority read their Host’s rules about having a campfire.
● About half of Hipcampers travel in pairs, and almost all travel in groups of 5 or fewer.
● Three-quarters of Hipcampers live in a city or a suburb.
● They camp to connect with nature and disconnect from technology.
